Kate Crawford is a research professor at the University of Southern California's Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism, a senior principal researcher at Microsoft Research, and the inaugural Visiting Chair for AI and Justice at the École Normale Supérieure in Paris. Her work focuses on the social, political and environmental implications of artificial intelligence, exploring how AI systems are developed, their hidden costs and their impact on power and society. She leads the Knowing Machines Project, which examines the training processes and broader implications of AI systems. Her book, "Atlas of AI: Power, Politics, and the Planetary Costs of Artificial Intelligence," analyzes the systemic and environmental consequences of AI. She has also advised policymakers at the United Nations, the White House, and the European Parliament on AI governance and ethics.
