Margaret Mitchell focuses on advancing AI systems in vision-language integration, natural language generation, and grounded communication, with applications in image captioning, visual question answering, and storytelling. Her research explores how AI can effectively process and communicate multimodal information while addressing ethical considerations, fairness and accessibility. She founded the Ethical AI group and co-founded the ML Fairness initiative at Google Research, having previously contributed to AI advancements at Microsoft Research. With a Ph.D. from the University of Aberdeen in natural reference for AI systems, Mitchell works to bridge machine learning, natural language processing, and computer vision, seeking to design AI systems aligned with human contexts and needs.
